Living Room

I started with the living room. The goal was to make it a bright and inviting space. The room felt dark and outdated, this was due in part to the covered porch. Porches are beautiful features but they block a lot of natural light.

Here is the room when we moved in:

I wanted the room to be bright and airy. The best way to accomplish this was with paint. I chose Snowbound by Sherwin Williams.

Even with the almost white walls, the room does not feel stark or dull. I achieved this by incorporating texture and warm tones.

The colors you choose for your walls and furniture have a big impact on your mood and emotions. Your home should be your sanctuary, so its important to understand the emotional impact a color will have in your home. I incorporated just enough color to add interest while still keeping the room calm and comfortable.

Another great way to add color to a space is by incorporating plants. Houseplants are the home decor staple that will never go out of style. They lend well to a homey ascetic and breathe new life into your home.

Plants can also be great space fillers. If you have an empty area but do not want to clutter it with another piece of furniture a plant can be a great option.

I updated the hall sconce from a single outdated fixture to a modern double to increase the light in the stairway. The right light will not only enhance a home’s features, but make it feel larger and more modern.

I carried the same paint color through the hall, stairway and kitchen. I prefer rooms that are not separated by doors to have one continuous color.

Are there things that I would still change? You bet! But remember, I live here. This is not a staged home. I believe that my home (and yours) should be functional and comfortable, for you, not some magazine. And I was able to achieve this beautiful cozy room within my budget.
