Design Boards

I frequently mention Design Boards, so I thought it could be helpful to show a few examples and explain a little about why I like using them as a design tool.

I create design boards to help outline my vision for a room, decide on color schemes, identify fabric pairings, and experiment with various furniture items. Design boards allow me to do all of this before spending a dime or lifting a paint brush. I find them to be a really valuable tool. As a designer, it can be easy for me to visualize a space but I realize that is not the case for everyone. Seeing a design board gives the client (and me!) an opportunity to envision what the finished product would look like. It helps us to see if certain colors or patterns work the way we are intending. They are an easy way to make tweaks and change selections before we actually commit to anything.

The above design board was created for a client’s living room. This client requested a completely neutral room. She wanted a space that felt comfortable and welcoming with an heir of sophistication. In this case, the design board really helped us visualize the room and make sure there were enough layers and textures to create that warm, inviting space she desired. All neutral rooms can sometimes feel very plain and boring. Creating a design board allowed us to ensure that would not be the case here.

This design board was created for a young girl’s room. The client wanted a bright, eclectic, and cheery room for her little girl. This design board was especially helpful since I was proposing some rather bold patterns. Seeing everything together helped us to edit and make sure the finished product wouldn’t be too busy.

This client was looking for a serene, sea-inspired master bedroom. Their style was traditional with some cottage / shabby-chic thrown in. We used this design board to really ensure that the colors and patterns we were using evoked the feel we wanted for the room.

I create a design board for almost every space. Sometimes we get it just right on the first attempt and sometimes it will go through a couple iderations as we tweak and refine the design. Ultimately, design boards help to show my vision for a space and guide every choice / purchase so that we end up with a room we love.
